GRANT CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Officials in Grant County say that a UPS driver was killed in a crash Tuesday evening.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 5:41 p.m. the Grant County Central Dispatch Center was contacted about a serious personal injury accident at the intersection of C.R. 975 West and C.R. 400 South involving two vehicles.
Police reported that the crash was in a nearby soybean field.
Officials with the Grant County Sheriff’s Department released the following:
Prior to Deputies arrival they were advised that C.P.R. was in progress with one of the individuals involved in the crash. Swayzee Fire Department, a Marion General Hospital Ambulance along with a Grant County E.M.S. Ambulance also responded.
Upon Deputies arrival all the subjects injured in the crash were being treated and prepared for transport. The driver of one of the vehicles along with a front seat passenger of another vehicle were being transported to another location by ambulance to be flown from the scene to Ft. Wayne Lutheran Hospital. Once at the location to be flown the driver of the U.P.S. delivery truck was pronounced deceased. The passenger of the other vehicle was flown to Ft. Wayne. The other Driver involved in the crash refused medical treatment.
Grant County Sheriff’s Department Crash Investigation Team 3 was activated to investigate the Crash, along with the Grant County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation at this time shows that a U.P.S. delivery truck, operated by the deceased, was Southbound on C.R. 975 West approaching the intersection of C.R. 400 South, this is a “T” intersection. The other vehicle, a single axel box truck was Westbound on C.R. 400 South approaching C.R. 975 West. For reason(s) unknown, the U.P.S. delivery truck failed to yield the right of way and struck the single axel style truck on the passenger side. The single axel box truck left the roadway to the south into a soybean field and came to a rest on its side facing East. The U.P.S. delivery truck also left the roadway to the South into the soybean field and came to a rest facing North. The driver of the U.P.S. delivery truck was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time until all notifications have been made.
The driver of the single axel box truck has been identified as Daniel Meza 47 years of age and last known address was in Kokomo Indiana. The passenger of the single axel box truck, that was flown to Ft. Wayne, is Wilmer Corrales 18 years of age and last known address was in Kokomo Indiana.
At this time Mr. Corrales has been treated and released from Ft. Wayne Lutheran for head lacerations.
This crash investigation is still on going and when more information is available for release it will be put out.
