Security guard fatally shoots partner, patient at Indiana hospital

MUNSTER, Ind. (ADAMS) – A hospital security guard is dead after his partner fired at a psychiatric patient at a northwest Indiana hospital.
Authorities say Ryan Askew and another guard responded early yesterday to a patient who became combative with staff at Munster Community Hospital. The patient, identified as Jamal Williams, grabbed a nurse and began hitting her.

After staff and the two guards managed to pull the nurse away, Williams placed Askew in a chokehold. The other guard then fired twice, killing both Askew and Williams.

Both security guards were retired Lake County sheriff’s officers in Indiana. Williams was a recent graduate of Western Michigan University, where he played football.
