WASHINGTON D.C. (ADAMS) – Native American children were subjected to forced assimilation in the 19th and 20th centuries at hundreds of boarding schools across the nation. NBC’s Antonia Hylton reports on a new study from the Interior Department.
Just over 400 schools in the U.S. renamed Native American students, cut their hair and told them not to speak Indigenous languages.
The Department released a review of past government efforts to integrate Native American children into white American society, which involved separating them from their families.
Interior Secretary Deb Haaland insisted she makes it a priority to address the legacies these policies have had to assist in healing for Indigenous people.
NBC reports Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet secretary, announced the findings and said that many children died.
