NEW CASTLE, Ind. (ADAMS) – A New Castle woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a head-on collision in the 2600 block of south SR 103. New Castle Officers along with the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, New Castle Fire and EMS responded just before 3 p.m.to the report of a head-on collision on SR 103 just north of CR 300 S. They arrived to find three people with critical injuries, with all three being transported by medical helicopter to hospitals in Indianapolis.
The Indiana State Police Pendleton District Crash Reconstruction Investigators were later called to the scene to take the investigation. According to the preliminary investigation by Trooper J.T. Burns, a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven by Katherine Brown, age 55 of Muncie, was traveling southbound on SR 103 when, for an unknown reason, she drove her car left of center into the northbound lane.
While in the northbound lane the Malibu hit a northbound 2014 Chrysler 200 head-on. The driver of that car, Doris Crawford, age 78, of New Castle, was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Indianapolis, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Katherine Brown and her passenger Jimmie Brown, age 59 of Muncie, were both airlifted to hospitals in Indianapolis in critical condition.
The crash had SR 103 closed for over three hours and the investigation remains ongoing. Trooper Burns was assisted at the scene by Crash Reconstruction Investigator, Master Trooper Scott Keegan; the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, New Castle Police Department, New Castle Fire and EMS, with INDOT assisting with the road closure.
