Dorothy Gillespie was a pioneer for women in the arts. In her impressive career of over 70 years, she was an activist, lecturer, and mentor to creative women throughout the world. Twenty years before her famous exhibitions at Walt Disney World and Rockefeller Center, Gillespie had a city-wide exhibition in Fort Wayne in 1979, which helped launch her career. This exhibition honors that instrumental exhibition, showcasing a dazzling array of outdoor sculptures.

Williams Woodland Park’s version of the national phenomenon called “PorchFest,” will offering live music, artists at work, storytellers, and a “KidFest” component, complete with puppetshows. All of this will take place on 4 blocks of the neighborhood, with most performances on the porches of our historic homes. the Specialty will begin in Albion Indiana with the field events. It will start with a field trial and then the regular field events. Next will be agility, conformation and obedience/rally at the large multi-purpose event center called the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum (Coliseum) with about 108,000 square feet of exhibitor space. They will be utilizing about ½ of this facility.

Bill Blass: Fort Wayne’s Fashion Designer

In honor of his 100th birthday, the Fort Wayne History Center is celebrating Bill Blass, an American fashion icon and WWII Ghost Army soldier.  Born in Fort Wayne on June 22, 1922 and a class of 1940 South Side High School graduate, Blass is best known for being one of the premier American fashion designers of the 20th century. This exhibition illustrates Blass’ multifaceted life, containing sections dedicated to his upbringing in Fort Wayne, role in the Ghost Army, and success as a master of design and marketing.

The roots of skateboarding appear in the 1950s when surfers applied the idea of surfing to the streets. The first skateboards were simple, wooden planks with roller skate parts bolted to the bottom. By the 1960s, the first skateboard-specific manufacturers appeared as well as the first skateboarding contest. After this peak, popularity began to decline, but new advances in the urethane wheel in the early 1970s gave rise to a boom in the sport.

Join the City of Fort Wayne, the City of New Haven, and Fort Wayne Trails on these family-friendly bike rides. Rides begin at 6:00 pm every Tuesday throughout the summer.  Participants are asked to wear helmets and bring water along for the ride. Most rides are 8-9 miles long. The average speed is 10-12 mph. This is a “no one left behind ride” and families are welcome.
