FORT WAYNE, Ind (ADAMS) – Police say that a man is in critical condition after being hit by an SUV while riding a bike at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Tecumseh Street Wednesday night.
Police were called around 8:30 and found the man alert and conscious with a cut on his head.
The man said he had head pain and paramedics transported him to a local hospital in serious condition, which was later changed to a life-threatening condition by a physician.
According to a release from the FWPD, witnesses said the SUV had the green light at the intersection but the bicyclist went anyway.
Police say the driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. He did not report any injuries as a result of the crash. This incident remains under investigation.

On Wednesday, 09/21/2022, at approximately 8:37 PM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the intersection of Lake Avenue and Tecumseh Street reference a vehicle crash with injuries. Witnesses reported the crash involved a small SUV and a bicyclist. Officers arrived and located the male/adult bicyclist alert and conscious near the intersection. The victim had a laceration to his head and a complaint of pain to his head. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital in serious condition. Upon arriving at the hospital the victim’s condition was downgraded to life-threatening by a physician.
Preliminary information indicates the driver (sole occupant) of the SUV was traveling westbound on Lake Avenue. The bicyclist was attempting to cross Lake Avenue at Tecumseh Street northbound. A witness reported the bicyclist failed to yield the right-of-way and entered the intersection as the SUV proceeded through the intersection on a green traffic light.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. He did not report any injuries as a result of the crash. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
